Information you need to know before ordering Garlic:
We cannot ship Garlic to Washington, Idaho and Canada due to regulations in those locations.
There are 2 basic types of garlic, hardneck and softneck. This refers to the area just above the bulb where the stem attaches.
Softneck garlic is soft at the base of the stem that attaches to the bulb. Usually there are more cloves on each bulb (8-15) and they are smaller in size than the hardneck. Each clove has a "skin" that wraps around the bulb. The more quantity and thickness of the skin, the longer the bulb will store. Softnecks are used in braiding. They store well (5-7 months) in a cool ventilated place. We are not selling our Kettle River Giant variety this year. We want to increase our inventory for next year 2017.
Hardneck garlic is not flexible at the base of the stem where it ataches to the bulb. The bulbs are large, usually 2" in diameter or larger. This type has few and larger cloves per bulb. Many only have 4-6 cloves. They are generally easier to peel because of the size of each clove. They produce scapes. This is a stem that grows in the middle of the plant that reaches 4-6 feet sometimes. At the top of this stem is a seed head. This needs to be cut off to allow the nutrients to go down into the bulb and make a bigger bulb instead of into the seed head to make seeds. This "scape" is edible and very tasty! Scapes are only available for about 2 weeks. They can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks, and can also be frozen. Use as a chive for flavor or on the grill for a side dish, or saute' with other veggies. Hardnecks store 3-4 months in a cool (not refrigerated) well ventilated place. We carry German White, Pskem, Music, Chesnok Red, Spanish Roja,
Culinary or "food" Garlic is smaller in size. This allows you to be more precise in your measurements when cooking. We use this size in our cooking. This is usually under 2" in diameter. You get about 8 bulbs or more in a pound of garlic.
Seed Garlic is large in size. These are 2" and more. These are primarily used for planting. The bigger the clove you plant, the bigger the bulb you will get using ideal growing conditions. 1/2 pound equals about 3 bulbs, 1 pound equals about 6 bulbs.
Ideal growing conditions: loose soil, planting 4-6 inches apart and 1-2" deep in rows 12" apart.
We mulch with at least 6 inches of mulch to keep from freezing in the winter. We also put a row cover on to keep the mulch from blowing away. We plant in mid- late October and harvest when 40% of the leaves turn brown (about mid- late July depending on the variety).
Be sure to cut off the scape when they have one or 2 turns or your bulb will be smaller than they could have been.
